Epilepsy Treatment General Information

"No seizures, no side effects" is the motto for epilepsy treatment. Not every person will achieve that goal right now, but the good news is that treatments are available that can successfully prevent seizures for most people with epilepsy. The first treatment is almost always seizure medication. If one seizure medication fails, others may be more successful.

Doctors know, however, that if the first few medicines fail to stop a person's seizures, the chances are not as good that a different medicine will be completely successful. Then it may be time to consider some other type of treatment, including surgery, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and the ketogenic diet.
